Welcome to Neuschwanstein Castle

How to get to Neuschwanstein Castle?

Whether you are on a road trip in Bavaria, next to Austria or simply in the area of Neuschwanstein Castle for a weekend, there are only two ways to visit the castle: by car or by train and bus.

We’ll tell you how to get to Neuschwanstein in both cases.

By car:

If you are traveling by car, the access is very easy. Just enter your destination in the GPS: “Hohenschwangau“.
It will be clearly marked on the road. You have to take the exit  “Füssen” on the Bundesautobahn 7 which crosses Germany from north to south.

You cannot drive directly to the castle.

You have to park in one of the four parking lots in the village of Hohenschwangau.
The parking costs 7€ for the day (6 hours of parking) or 12€ for 24 hours.
Usually, 6 hours of parking is more than enough.

By train and bus :

In general, you take the train from Munich. You will have to take the train to the city of Füssen. The train journey takes around two hours.
You can buy your train tickets directly on this website.

Once in Füssen, you will have to take a bus. You can take the buses 73 and 78.

  • bus 73 towards Steingaden / Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  • bus 78 towards Schwangau

The journey takes about 10 minutes and you have to stop at Hohenschwangau / Alpseestraße.

How do I get to the castle from this parking lot?

You cannot drive up to the castle (there are no exceptions).
There are 3 ways to get to the castle.

1. On foot

About 40 minutes of upwards walk (1.6 kilometers), the road is in good condition. This is the cheapest and the most physical solution!

2. Take the shuttle

You will have to pay 2,6€ to go up to the castle with the shuttle. The shuttle will take you to Marienbrücke (to take nice pictures of the castle with the lake and the forest in the background).

You will still have to walk for 10 minutes because the shuttles do not go directly to the gates (the path is too narrow).

3. By carriage

The starting point is the Hotel Müller (Alpseestraße).
The price is 7€ for the ride up and 3,5€ for the ride down. Tickets can are purchased directly at the carriages.

Why should you book your tickets to Neuschwanstein Castle?

With 1.5 million tourists visiting this castle every year, it is the most visited castle in Europe with up to 8000 tourists visiting every day. It can therefore be tricky to visit Neuschwanstein Castle because of the limited amount of tickets available every day.

Even though the tour only lasts 30 minutes, it is not possible to accommodate too many people inside the castle at the same time.

There are two ways to buy tickets to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle:

  • On the same day, directly at the Hohenschwangau ticket office. Tickets are only sold on the same day. It is not possible to buy a ticket there for the next day for example. This, however, is a risky choice because sometimes you have to wait in line for more than 3 hours at the ticket office (and you are not even sure to get a ticket for the same day if you are not among the first ones at the ticket office).
  • You can also book a guided tour directly online. This will allow you to buy your tickets in advance and to book the time slot of your choice. This is the best option if you want to visit Neuschwanstein Castle without waiting for several hours or having to postpone your visit to the next day.
